Inspection of Retirement Facilities

Under the “Helping Hands” community project SLA NSW has been working closely with the Uniting group to address the needs of seniors in the Sri Lankan community. SLA NSW together with the Uniting Group, held a briefing session for the seniors and others recently which provided an overview of what facilities are available for the seniors in the community. Resulting from this information session, Uniting offered the SLA NSW an opportunity to see a culturally aligned seniors living facility in NSW. This facility at Shellharbour which is located approximately 100Km south of Sydney is occupied predominantly by seniors from a Spanish background.

On Saturday 16th October, Uniting provided 16 members of the Sri Lankan community the opportunity to see this facility. The group of interested people commenced the trip from Thornleigh Community Centre where Uniting picked the SLA NSW members in two separate mini buses. on arrival at the Shelharbour facility Uniting provided the group a beautiful lunch and afternoon tea with also a tour of the facility with a presentation. All those who attended were well looked after by the team from Uniting and gained a lot of knowledge and understanding about the features of such a facility. Uniting staff drove the members of SLA NSW back to Sydney in the two separate mni buses.

We are extremely grateful for the sincerity and generosity shown by Uniting. Our next steps are to follow up on this experience with further discussions with Uniting in relation to what we can achieve for the Sri Lankan community.
